Cut string stairs offer significant flexibility when manufacturing.
"Modern" cut string staircases tend to have both the treads and risers overhanging the string and square edges, such as in the case of this staircase.
This style of stair has become particularly fashionable in recent years in houses where the customer wants a modern timber staircase that makes a statement.
Given the treads and risers overhang on this style of staircase and that to look correct, they need to be the same thickness, you're generally going to use 32mm or 44mm thick treads.
There's no structural reason to use 44mm treads over 32mm treads.
However, using a 44mm section in a large hallway for the treads and risers adds gravitas to the staircase and makes more of a statement.
Matte black 12mm square metal spindles have recently become more fashionable for staircase balustrades.
We sell these in our shop, designed to go into a 13mm grooved handrail & baserail.
However, the stairs do not have a baserail on a cut-string staircase.
As such, we've put square holes into each tread for these to sit on.
We also create longer spindles for the stairs as longer spindles are required due to the lack of baserail.
On the first floor landing, a baserail was supplied for conventional fitting.
"Standard Construction" staircases have structural rigidity from wedges and glue blocks. However, this means the underside of the stairs has to be covered.
"Exposed Back" staircases are held together using screws which go in through the string and are then covered; this means the underside can be left exposed (hence the name). This takes longer, so there is an additional cost, but it can look effective if the property creates a scenario where leaving the underside exposed would add a feature to the stairs.
The newel post caps on this staircase match the finish of the black metal spindles, both being a matte black finish.
These simple black metal caps complement the stairs really well.
