Case Studies - White Oak cut string staircase with chamfered balustrades.

REF: 772-balbir

3D Model;

About This Staircase:

We manufactured this staircase back in 2011 for a repeat customer in London.

We made this rather beautiful traditional cut string staircase to their dimensions.

Notable Features:

Traditional Cut String With Brackets

This staircase features a "cut string" up the inside. Instead of the spindles sitting on top of the string, the string is cut away, and the spindles sit on top of the treads.

Decorative brackets are also featured on this staircase. These are pieces of timber planted onto the side immediately below the treads.

Each bracket is bespoke to the stair, and various styles are available (both traditional and modern). These brackets feature a chamfer to match the balustrade and give a more contemporary finish.

Some examples of the brackets we can offer are below:

N.B. It's also possible to have a cut-string stair without brackets.

Gloss Finish:

This staircase was finished with a gloss varnish.

This has become less popular with more people opting for matt or satin finishes.

The difference between the raw oak (in factory photos) and the finished stair is quite stark.

Post Stepped Back:

The pictures and plan view show that this staircase was manufactured with the top post stepped back.

A customer request; due to the way the property worked, we wouldn't recommend this.

Feature Treads:

This staircase features two feature treads.

Tread one is a double-going curtail.

Tread two is a single-going curtail.

These two feature treads allow the bottom post to be set back by two treads (approx 500mm). Allowing the hallway to feel bigger and giving the staircase a grander appearance.

Other Layouts:

We also offer other staircase layouts, these include, paddle stairs, S-shape stairs, T-shape stairs or stairs with three or more turns. We also offer stairs suitable for commercial buildings which are wider and made from more substantial materials than domestic staircases.

Styles & Materials

Construction Methods:

All layouts of staircases can be constructed in different ways which will effect the final finish, these include:

  • Open riser construction; this is where the risers are left open with either a timber strip or metal bar built in to comply to regulations.
  • Cut string construction; where the sides of the strings are cut away so the treads can be seen, this can either be done in a modern or traditional way.

Materials:

The materials used on your staircase will have a dramatic effect on how they look, most stairs will use the following materials.

  • Pine; all our stairs are manufactured from high quality furniture grade pine, we do not use any whitewood.
  • White Oak; we can manufacture all or part(s) of your staircase from premium White Oak, to give that stunning finish.
  • Glass; we offer stairs with glass balustrade, either as small panels or large panels, secured with brackets or by embedding with a groove.
