Space saver stairs, also known as loft stairs or paddle stairs.
They should only be used where a normal staircase cannot be used and only serve one room.
This staircase was used to reach a mezzanine area and met these criteria.
However, we do not recommend space saver stairs.
For more information on this type of staircase, see our blog post here.
This entire staircase was manufactured from pine.
However, the entirety of the staircase was painted white except for the treads.
This is because painted treads tend to chip easily and look unslightly.
It's also tricky to carpet a space saver staircase.
The treads on this staircase have been stained darker to give a resemblance closer to oak.
Paddle stairs are popular for mezzanine floors in apartments and houses as you often aren't gaining much space. As such, the amount of space a "standard construction" staircase would take up would negate the space gained by having the mezzanine.
For occasional use, in small spaces, paddle stairs do make a lot of sense.
