To achieve this, we've put a groove in the underside of the tread.
While it's not a problem to do this, to achieve it, it's often necessary to have a longer than usual tread overhang (25mm instead of 20mm).

It's possible to have traditional round feature treads or more modern square feature treads like this staircase.
All feature treads have the benefit of moving the first post backward, which creates the feeling of more space.
With square feature treads, the amount of space taken up is variable as there's no curve to worry about.
For this stair, the client opted to have the tread one projecting 600mm past the stairs' width, as shown on the plan view.
